Alright beautiful people, I have wasted some cash on another movie, and as a result you no longer have to! What did I see this time? Well, I saw The Chernobyl Diaries, and here is the trailer for the uninitiated.
Granted the movie doesn’t look great from the get go, but I was a fan of the first Paranormal Activity flick (and the 2 sequels actually…) and I thought I’d go check this one out. The first thing I have to say about this is that it’s NOT a found footage movie, which based on the trailer I really thought it was. It does occasionally combine some ‘found-footage’ moments but anyone going to see it because they thought that’s what it was will be surprised. The movie toed the line between being awful, and being alright and in the end was just ok.
While being a bit cheeseball and having some genuinely funny moments, the movie fell a bit flat in the execution. The basic premise is that during a trip to Moscow, a character’s brother decides that they’ll all make a quick pit stop in Chernobyl, which has been reopened for tourists. So off they go to the neighboring city where the employees of Chernobyl lived and were forced to evacuate without any notice and many of their belongings are still there. So, as is expected, when the group tries to leave the van won’t start, and they spend the remainder of the movie running from dogs, bears, and deformed humans. It felt a little like The Hills Have Eyes, in Chernobyl. I wouldn’t write this one off completely, I’d say wait for the DVD or, dare I say, the download. I won’t be rushing out to see it again. If you haven’t seen The Avengers yet, go out and watch that one.
All in all I’d give it **.
Though, I did see one trailer in particular that got me even more excited about Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, so I’ll share that with you. I really would love more people to get on board with this movie…
